Winners since then have included Bobby Moore, Virginia Wade, Ian Botham, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton but the award has been dominated by one man in the most recent years.

Andy Murray won in 2013, 2015 and 2016 as his journey to two Wimbledon titles and world No 1 won him the hearts of the British nation.

But the Scot does not even feature on the 12-person shortlist this time around after a hip injury forced him to end his season six months early.
