BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR, perhaps better known by its acronym SPOTY, has been running for more than 50 years and remains one of sport’s most prestigious awards.

The award started in 1954 when Commonwealth three-mile champion Christopher Chataway, who later became an MP for Lewisham North, beat Roger Bannister to top spot.
Winners since then have included Bobby Moore, Virginia Wade, Ian Botham, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton but the award has been dominated by one man in the most recent years.
Andy Murray won in 2013, 2015 and 2016 as his journey to two Wimbledon titles and world No 1 won him the hearts of the British nation.
But the Scot does not even feature on the 12-person shortlist this time around after a hip injury forced him to end his season six months early.

The gala awards evening at the Echo Arena in Liverpool will be held on Sunday December 17.
