V K Saraswat, member of NITI Aayog and former chief of DRDO, said that the Centre is promoting coal gasification to convert high ash coal into methanol to use it as cooking gas with an aim to cut down india’s dependence on West Asian countries for LPG imports.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a conference on Internal Combustion Engines and Combustion at NIT-K on Friday. “The government notification about methanol blending with LPG will be released next week. Currently, we import major part of LPG and by opting for methanol as an alternate fuel, we aim tio save billions of dollars,” he added.
Asked why methanol is chosen as an alternative fuel for LPG, he said it is viable and non-pollutant. “We plan to blend around 20 percent of methanol,” he said, adding that the government has given responsibility to Sweden-based company to produce methanol-operated cooking gas stove.
