Panaji: In a bid to compel the government to ensure proper water supply in their area, nearly 200 residents of Kadamba plateau have threatened to go on a Jal Satyagraha wherein they will observe a day-long fast on December 19.
STOI had reported on November 7 that the residents have been depending on tanker water for their daily needs and have threatened to go on Jal Satyagraha if supply is not restored to them by December 19.
Responding to the threats, chief minister Manohar Parrikar said he is working towards restoring water supply and that a tender has been floated for laying pipelines. He also said that water supply will be restored after the Opa project, a 27MLD plant, is completed.
However, Kadamba plateau residents' action committee president, Nilesh Joshi said that the government is yet to start the work of laying pipelines. "Many statements have been made to the media about restoring water supply, but initiative is yet to be taken by the government," he said.
The peaceful demonstration will begin with a water dindi at 8.45am from the government employees' housing society. The protesters will walk to the Satyagraha site with empty vessels. Freedom fighter Kalindi Zuwarkar will hoist a flag to mark Goa Liberation Day after which Prakash Pawar, a senior citizen from one of the colonies, will take an oath to commence the fast. The residents, including women and children, will fast from 9.15am to 5.30pm.
