NEW DELHI: A day before her son Rahul Gandhi takes over as Congress president+ , his mother Sonia Gandhi hinted that she's close to retiring from politics.

"My role is now to retire," said Sonia, without giving any details or a time frame.

Later in the day, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala in a tweet clarified that Sonia Gandhi has retired as the president of Indian National Congress, and not from politics.



The Congress on Monday named <a class="key_underline" href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</a> its new president+ . The 47-year-old leader will take over the reins of the party from his mother and current president, Sonia , who has held the position for 19 years.


Rahul had taken over as the party's vice-president in January 2013.


"The entire country has lots of expectations from Rahul Gandhi. Much before he was elected, he has shown his mettle. He knows his responsibility," senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Monday.
