Tirupur: Food safety and drug administration (FSDA) seized about 100kg of dead chickens which were about to be supplied for food stalls in the city on Friday.

Two men people were held in connection with this, which was the second catch in a gap of a month in the district. A man was booked after about 70kg of dead chickens was seized in Palladam last month. The culprits have admitted to the FSDA authorities that they have collected the dead chickens from different dump yards in Palladam and surrounding areas.

On information, the Veerapandi police followed one Velliyangiri, 55, when he was carrying the dead chickens in his moped and discovered that he was about to cut and clean them with a plan of selling them as meat. Along with the police, FSDA authorities have seized about 100kg of dead chickens from his house at Kallangadu. The dead chickens were buried later.

"Velliyangiri was found to have used his house to clean the dead chickens and blend the meat with masala. He does not have any food stall to sell but he would sell the ready-mix chicken to many road-side food stalls," said K Tamil Selvan, designated Officer of Tirupur FSDA.

As per our preliminary investigations, he along with one of his relatives, Puroshottham, 52, would collect the dead chickens which were illegally disposed by poultries in dump yards, said Dr Tamil Selvan.

He said, "It was a serious crime which may cause health issues to consumers. So, they have planned to book them under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, with which, they can be fined of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh."
