Cruise secrets: Why THIS is considered lucky on a ship

Cruise secrets often reveal some unknown truths regarding the life onboard a ship at sea.

One cruise worker has explained how they easily get around the ship using hidden corridors, unbeknownst to the passengers.

It has also been revealed why one item was seen to be particularly lucky when it was on a ship.

Superstitious passengers may not agree with the symbol.

Cruise secrets: Black cats were considered lucky on a ship

Black cats were once considered lucky when onboard a cruise ship

Black cats were once considered lucky when onboard a cruise ship, due to a number of reasons.

While they aren’t on ships as often nowadays, they were good at catching vermin that were “eating away at ropes”, accorded to Pullmantur Cruises.

Not only this, but they were also able to detect changes in the weather that humans were unable to, due to their sensitive inner ear.

They showed this to the crew by acting restless, something caused by low atmospheric pressure.

Cruise secrets: Many things were considered to be bad luck such as a woman on a ship

Another way in which they gave luck to those on board was if it walked up to the captain of a ship.

To those who are believe in omens, they also thought that a cat who walked away from the captain was then considered unlucky.

Despite the prospect of bad luck, the crew were unable to get rid of the cat, as throwing it overboard was also believed to issue years of bad luck to all onboard.

Whilst cats were seen as good luck, a variety of superstitions were believed to have given bad luck such as having a woman onboard, departing on a Friday or the first Monday in April, and throwing stones into the sea.

Cruise ships also don’t have a 13th deck due to superstitions and instead jump from Deck 12 to Deck 14.

The number 13 is often seen as unlucky, with those who fear the number having Triskaidekaphobia.

Others think it doesn’t exist as the number 13 is a sign of death, with Judas being the 13th guest to sit down before betraying Jesus.

Andy Harmer, SVP Membership & Director, CLIA UK & Ireland, said: “As superstition goes, in some cultures the number 13 is considered ‘unlucky for some’.”
