THE Formula One girls could be axed from the grid as the sport looks to review the 50-year-old tradition.

Girls lining up in tight lycra have been an institution of the motor racing giant.

The official duties of the girls are are holding there grid numbers, but they are also seen hold umbrellas before standing on the podium.

But recent races have seen the practice slammed as “outdated” and “tarty nonsense”.

Managing director of motorsport Ross Brawn said: “We’re trying to respect all parties.

“There’s a lot of respect the tradition of the grid girls and there’s people who feel that it has become a bit dated, so we’re addressing that.”

Other solutions have been trialled to eliminate the opposition of the grid girls.

At the Monaco Grand Prix in 2015, male models were used on the grid.

The sport now wants as many views as possible on the issue.

But top driver Daniel Ricciardo has called for the tradition to continue.

He said: “It’s what you grew up with. I guess as a kid eve, you see the umbrella girls the grid girls.

“It’s part of the attraction of the sport.”
