A man who dated Catherine Campbell is testifying today as a defence witness in the second-degree murder trial of Christopher Garnier in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax.
The man, whose name is banned from publication, is testifying about Campbell's prior sexual activity. Before the man began, Justice Josh Arnold told the jury they can use the evidence to determine if Campbell enjoyed rough sex, as the defence has alleged.
The witness told the jury he had sex with Campbell twice and at one time he put his hands around her throat.
Garnier is accused of killing Campbell, an off-duty Truro, N.S., police officer on Sept. 11, 2015. He's also been charged with interfering with human remains. Garnier has pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Garnier and Campbell met at a bar and returned to a Halifax apartment where Garnier was staying on the night she died. He has testified that Campbell wanted him to dominate, slap and choke her.
The defence has argued that Campbell's death was accidental.
