K Natarajan, treasurer of DMK-backed Labour Progressive Front, said, "the government and the administration have spent Rs 7,000 crore deducted from the salary of transport workers. When we protested earlier, we were promised that the money would be given back to us before the end of August. Till now, no steps have been taken on this front. Also, we want assurances on gratuity and pension. Retirement benefits should be provided to workers."
Other demands include salary on par with state government employees of other departments and discussion on 13th pay revision etc.
Office-bearers of transport unions said more than 1.4 lakh employees are expected to take part in protests and 22,000 government buses would go off roads.
Recently, managing director of Metropolitan Transport Corporation V Krishnamoorthy held a meeting with representatives of different unions. But there was no headway in the meeting, following which the protest has started.
Earlier this year too, transport employees went on strike. During the strike period, private buses, school & college vehicles and company buses were operated by the government.
