CHANDIGARH: Police officials in Bhiwani have booked two women for allegedly burning their mother-in-law alive. Till late evening on Thursday, the two daughters-in-law, Roshani Singh, 38, and Shakuntla Singh, 39, both residents of Shimli village near Tosham, had not been arrested but they were booked for murder with common intention.

Inspector Bikram Singh, SHO of Tosham police station, said they received a complaint from Rajapti, 35, who works as a midwife in Karnal that her mother Janki Devi was burnt alive by her 'bhabis' on Wednesday night.

Rajpati claimed that her siblings include two sisters and three brothers and all were married. Her father Nathu Ram was living with her brother Mahender Singh, while Janki Devi was living with her for the past eight years because the sisters-in-law were not looking after her. It was only on November 28 that her mother had returned to village to attend a family function.

"On Wednesday at around 10 pm, I received a call from my brothers that my mother was engulfed in flames when she was sitting near a fire to keep herself warm. On reaching the village, I found the burnt body of my mother lying in the ambulance. I found that Roshani, wife of Jagdish Singh, and Shakuntla, wife of Ishwar Singh, had set my mother on fire and they are responsible for her death because they wanted to get rid of her," complainant has claimed.

Police officials told the TOI that an arrest would be made only after getting concrete evidence. The SHO said both the accused have been asked to join the investigation.
