Reports suggest that Rahane's father was driving a i20 which hit a 67-year-old lady. People immediately gathered at the accident site and took the woman to a nearby government hospital but the lady succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
The Kolhapur Police has reportedly registered a case under the IPC Act 304A, 337, 338, 279 and 184.
Rahane is presently with the rest of the Indian cricket team which is involved in a 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The last match of the series will be played on Sunday in Visakhapatnam.
Rahane himself has been going through a patchy phase, struggling to score runs in the recently concluded home season.
However, former captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the Mumbai batsman, saying he deserves a place in the line-up.
"It is imperative Rahane plays at No.3. In fact, to my mind, both Rahane and KL Rahul (not in the squad) should be playing more and more ODIs. When Virat comes back at No.3, there will still be slots at Nos.4 and 5 (with Dhoni at No.6) and if you are looking at the World Cup 2019, I would want the selectors and team management to back Rahane and Rahul. They have proved themselves in the past and I think they will make the middle-order more productive.” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
