The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) arrested Abdus Samad alias Arif Mamu and two others on Wednesday night. Abdus Samad was the 'second-in-command' of the neo-JMB group led by Tamim Chowdhury.
DMP Deputy Commi-ssioner (media) Masudur Rahman said 200 detonators, five bullets and a pistol were recovered from their possession. Samad was arrested alongwith two other suspects - his father-in-law Ziadul Islam and Md Azizul Islam aka Mehedi Hasan and Shishir were arrested during a raid in Dhaka's Mohakhali on Wednesday evening, he added.
Samad from Dinajpur, sat for his Hadith exams in 2002 and Fazil exams in 2011 said Ziadul Islam joined JMB in 2010. An initial interrogation found that Samad formed a group named 'Zunad Al Tawheed al Khilafai' with Tamim Chowdhury in 2014. Tamim was the chief of the organisation, while Samad was his 'second-in-command'. Samad was involved in a range of militant activities, including making explosives, said Islam.
Neo-JMB is an ultra-radical offshoot of the banned outfit JMB. He recruited new operatives for the organisation, raised funds and even made high-level decisions, he claimed. Samad trained new members to handle weapons and use grenades. He eventually climbed the ranks following the arrests and making explosives, said Islam.

Last June, an individual nicknamed Ayyub Bachchu was attempting to organise a neo-JMB militant outfit, Islam said. However, on the following month three women were arrested at a suspected militant hideout in Kushtia's Bheramara. At Thursday's briefing, Islam said Tamim Chowdhury and Samad played significant roles in establishing militant training camps in Kalyanpur and Mirpur areas.
Samad took over the organisation's activities after the arrest of Holey Artisan attack's plotter Sohel Mahfuz, he said. Police said, Samad's father-in-law Ziadul Islam was tasked with smuggling weapons, explosives and detonators across the Chapainawabganj border and was also tasked with maintenance and distribution. The police also recovered a 9mm pistol, five rounds of ammunitions and 200 detonators from the detainees during the raid.
According to Rapid Action Battalion, Sarwar Jahan alias Abdur Rahman , and also called Abu Ibrahim al-Hanif was the chief of New JMB while Gulshan cafe attack's mastermind Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury was his second-in-command of the group.
Some other top and second-tier leaders of the New JMB group are Basharuzzaman alias Abul Bashar alias Chocolate, Abdus Samad alias Mamu alias Arif, Sohel Mahfuz alias Hatkata Mahfuz, Mamunur Rashid Ripon, Khalid, Junayed Hasan Khan, Iqbal, Manik, Mamun, Azadul Kabiraz and Badal.
Our Court Correspondent reported that the arrested three operatives of neo-JMB, including Abdus Samad alias Arif Mamu alias Ashique, one of its founder member, were placed on a five-day remand on Thursday.
The two other operatives are are Azizul Islam Mehedi alias Shisir and Ziadul Islam.  
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ahsan Habib issued the remand order as the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit  Sub- Inspector  Md Mahfuzul Haque Chowdhury , also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced the trio before the court with a prayer for a ten-day remand.
