HYDERABAD: The state government is against bringing petrol and diesel under the purview of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The same was conveyed by Finance Minister E Rajender at the Empowered Committee meeting of GST in Delhi on Thursday. The Empowered Committee meeting was chaired by Ministry of Finance secretary Hasmukh Adhiya. The meeting discussed about the till date performance of GST and in the wake of slip in the tax revenue in October.

Rajender said that the state governments needed much time to overcome the problems due to GST. “Even though the growth rate of TS is 21.9 per cent and stood top in the country, the state has been facing minor problems due to the implementation of GST,” the Finance Minister said. He recalled that the tax imposed by the Centre on petrol and diesel was higher than the taxes being imposed by the states.

The Centre should reduce its tax on petroleum products instead of asking the state governments to reduce the taxes, Rajender said. He recalled that the tax being collected by the Centre on petrol was `17 per litre.According to official sources, once petrol, diesel, and stamps and registration were brought under GST, the states would have no other options but to collect more revenues through taxes.
