Porvorim: The state government will create a facility where low budget tourists visiting the state can cook, camp and avail of toilet provisions.

All tourists do not put up at hotels, chief minister Manohar Parrikar said, "There will be always certain sections who will come with lower budgets."

Replying during zero hour, he said: "We are identifying places where people can cook and camp. There will also be toilet facilities (at the site). Arrangements to clean the area will also be made."

The state government will also form a special squad to take necessary action against tourists littering public spaces, Parrikar said, and added that he has already issued necessary directions in the matter.

The CM said that in 2001 he had passed the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001, to enable the government to clamp down on nuisances affecting tourism in the state. The act will be amended and public nuisances will be specified, Parrikar said.

Leader of opposition Chandrakant 'Babu' Kavlekar said that there was fear among the public about the domestic tourists who come on private buses and cook their meals by the roadside.

This has not only given rise to the "alarming problem of garbage, safety and health", but is also ruining the state's reputation, besides damaging local restaurant and hotel business, Kavlekar said.
