Old, new vehicles in Surat need to fit HSRPs by January 15

SURAT: Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued an ultimatum to vehicle users in the Diamond City asking them to get High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) fitted on their vehicles before January 15, 2018, or else be prepared to pay fine of Rs 500.

Supreme Court had on Thursday sought response from Assam, Delhi, Bihar, Haryana and Gujarat on a contempt plea alleging non-compliance of the order relating to ensuring HSRPs on all vehicles.

The apex court had in 2012 asked all the states and the Union territories to ensure HSRPs for all vehicles by June 15 that year or face contempt of court proceedings.

On August 8, the apex court had sought response from five states in another contempt plea alleging non-compliance of its order relating to ensuring HSRPs on vehicles.

Official sources said auto dealers, including those selling cars and two-wheelers, have been appointed deemed RTO and that they have been doing registration of vehicles and fitting HSRP number plates on the vehicles. However, there are many vehicle owners in the Diamond City who flout norms by not fitting the HSRPS, and go for fancy number plates available in open market.

"We have issued an official notification to the owners of old and new vehicles in the city for fitting HSRPs latest by January 15, 2018, or else they will have to pay fine amount of Rs 500," a senior RTO officer said.

Sources said charge for fitting HSRP on two-wheelers and three-wheelers has been prescribed at Rs 89, whereas for four-wheelers it is Rs 150.

"The old and new vehicle owners can visit the RTO or the deemed RTOs in the city to get HSRPs fitted," the RTO officer said.
