Former Marquette men's basketball player Haanif Cheatham will transfer to Florida Gulf Coast University, the guard announced on Friday.

Cheatham played in five games for the Golden Eagles this season before leaving the team for personal reasons. He was averaging 8.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 26.2 minutes per game.

He started 63 of the 70 games during his time with the Golden Eagles.

The 6-foot-5 Cheatham, from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was looking for a school closer to home.

Florida Gulf Coast is part of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Eagles came to prominence in 2013 with a run to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, earning the moniker "Dunk City" for their exciting style.

Cheatham is a junior and will have a season of eligibility remaining, starting in the second semester of next season. He also can sit out all of next season and then play the entire 2019-'20 season.

If he can get a NCAA waiver for the five games he appeared in this season, then Cheatham will have two seasons of eligibility.
