Plundering taxpayers – 70 Rail chiefs earn more than Theresa May despite public fare HIKE

SHOCKING new figures have revealed that at least 70 Network Rail civil servants earn more than Theresa May following the biggest rail fare rise in five years, it has been revealed.

Network Rail leader Mark Carne earns £750,000 a year, many times more than Theresa May

The incredible sums of money, released by the Cabinet Office, revealed that Network Rail leader Mark Carne earns £750,000 a year - a sum that dwarfs the £150,000 earned by the Prime Minister.

John O’Connell, from the TaxPayers’ Alliance campaign group, said: “Taxpayers will find it remarkable that they are paying quite so many sky-high salaries to senior apparatchiks when austerity is still needed to fix the public finances.”

He also told the Daily Mail: “Public sector pay should be linked much more closely to achievement and results, as they are in the private sector.”

The sharp increases in civil servant pay are costing taxpayers £82million a year - an unbelievable rise of 41 per cent from the £58million paid two years ago.

The rail company has at least 70 staff on more money than Mrs May, an increase of 22 from last year.

Mr Carne saw a whopping £65,000 pay rise in a year despite the problems facing Network Rail - the company has been accused of failing to organise a timetable for Christmas engineering works, meaning many who have bought tickets could see their train cancelled.

The company’s chairman, Peter Hendy, defended his £380,000 a year by stating “pay packages are relatively low by comparison” with the private sector.

The Cabinet Office stated: “The Civil Service deals with complex issues and needs to attract, recruit, retain and motivate highly skilled individuals.

“However, the Government is determined to save taxpayers’ money and the number of individuals earning £150,000 and above in central government has reduced by 20 per cent since 2010.”

Rail company High Speed 2 (HS2) is also leading a movement supercharging civil servant pay with 51 people bringing in more than the Prime Minister - an increase of 9 from last year.

HS2 chief executive Mark Thurston reportedly earns £605,000.

At least 442 civil servants earn more than Mrs May - an increase of 14 per cent in a year.

The jaw-dropping figures did not include sums from local councils or NHS trusts.

From January 2, travellers will be plagued with the 3.4 per cent rail fare rise - the biggest since 2013.

The chief executive of passenger watchdog Transport Focus, Anthony Smith, said that "basic promises" continue to be broken despite "substantial investment" in new trains.

He declared: "While substantial, welcome investment in new trains and improved track and signals is continuing, passengers are still seeing the basic promises made by the rail industry broken on too many days."

Reports claim that one in nine trains have arrived late to their destinations in the last year.
