Report: The Galaxy S9 might not be at CES 2018, but these new handsets will

Over the last few weeks, rumours have circulated claiming Samsung could upstage the array of big tellies at CES 2018 by giving us a sneak preview at the Galaxy S9.

The company has since noted that’s unlikely, but it doesn’t mean the year’s biggest tech show will be completely free of Samsung smartphones.

According to a report out of South Korea, the firm plans to launch at least two smartphones during the Las Vegas expo.

It claims the 2018 iterations of the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ upper-mid-range handsets are likely to be present on the bustling Samsung stage.

Last week the user manual for the new devices reportedly leaked online, so an imminent launch seems like a plausible development

Infinity for less

The ET News source says the phones will have the same 18:9 Infinity Displays as featured on the Samsung Galaxy S8. The report says the larger handset will be the first of the A-Series to boast a 6-inch AMOLED display.

The Bixby personal assistant will be present, according to the report. While Bixby Voice won’t be available on the A8 handsets, there’ll be features called Bixby Home and Bixby Rewind.

Other notable features reportedly include the presence of Samsung Pay via a fingerprint sensor, the retention of the 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C charging.

The report also says the Samsung Experience interface will support the popular multi-window and pop-up view features common on higher-end devices.

The launch of the phones at CES would still be surprising, given Mobile World Congress is just a month later in Barcelona.

If the Galaxy S9 does indeed skip CES, we may see it arrive at an Unpacked Event shortly before MWC.
