Joel Embiid's game has developed at an unthinkable rate. Just over five years ago, he was playing junior-varsity basketball. And it was four years ago - to the day - that we saw the first true glimpse of Embiid's once-in-a-generation potential.
On Dec. 14, 2013, Embiid channeled Hakeem Olajuwon and broke out his first "Dream Shake" in a game against New Mexico with the Kansas Jayhawks.
For Embiid, that game served as a turning point in his basketball career. He scored a Kansas career-high 18 points and firmly caught the attention of NBA scouts who had followed Kansas around that season to watch eventual No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins. The Sixers took Embiid with the third pick.
In 2014, The Houston Chronicle looked back on the Olajuwon-esque move that served as a prelude to Embiid's NBA stardom.
This time, it was a Joel Embiid highlight.
It was his first time using the move in a game.
Playing against New Mexico, Embiid faked out Alex Kirk, who won Mountain West All-Defensive honor last season for the Lobos.
Shortly after, the two players stood on the free-throw line talking and laughing.
"Good move," Kirk told him. "But you walked."
"Uh-uh," Embiid said. "That was the Dream shake."
Four years later, Embiid is still using the Dream Shake.
