The 21-year-old appeared to confirm a loan move to the Championship club next month in an alleged message to a supporter on Instagram.
An image of McBurnie’s interaction with the fan on Instagram has been doing the rounds on fellow social media site Twitter.
Instagram user matty.w04 posted a message which read: “Join Villa.”
To which McBurnie allegedly replied: “I am.”
Villa fans, however, have given a mixed reaction to the idea he could be joining.
One supporter said: “If it's permanent then great, loan not so great we've our own kids!”
Another added: “Why are we signing players like Oli McBurnie!!! Please don’t.”
A third fan said: “Must say I would be completely baffled if Oli McBurnie signed for us.

“Is he even a ‘target man'? Would make more sense to try and find a more experienced player.
“We have some great young strikers of our own!”
Another supporter said: “Oli McBurnie is a good player.”
But another warned: “We need an established striker to give us that final push for promotion sadly this boy isn't the answer.”
Villa boss Steve Bruce needs to reinforce his attack after losing Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan to injury.
McBurnie has made seven appearances as a substitute for Swansea in the Premier League this season.
He has also bagged seven goals in five appearances at Under-23 level.
Villa have limited funds to strengthen next month due to Financial Fair Play limitations.
