Commercial banks disburse fewer crop loans

Nationalised and commercial banks are collecting more deposits and handling a majority of the State treasury transancitons but giving fewer crop loans compared to the cooperative banks.

This was revealed from the information furnished in the State Assembly by Cooperation Minister Surjya Narayan Patro in response to a question of BJP MLA Dilip Ray on Wednesday.

According to information, 16,63,662 farmers were given a total of loan amount of Rs 5,933.07 crore by December 5 against the target of Rs 12,000 crore set to be disbursed during Khariff and Rabi cultivation periods this year. However, the commercial banks have disbursed a total of farm loans of Rs 1,735.58 crore by June-end this year.

Similarly, cooperative banks had disbursed total farm loans of Rs 10,204.81 crore and commercial banks of Rs 5,340.44 crore during he last year, 2016-17. During 2015-16, the loan amounts disbursed by both the categories of banks were Rs 9,572.22 crore and Rs 6,520.90 crore.

Commenting on the reply, Ray said the State Government should take steps for conducting more monetary transactions in view of the State’s Annual Budget going above Rs1.10 lakh crore.
