Meat Market Update | Prime Rib declines pulls the cutout lower

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The daily Choice cutout ended the week only 40 cents lower and was held up by the daily Choice rib primal, which was almost $5 higher by Friday. However, that Rib primal started it’s normal seasonal decline after the buying period for the Christmas party season was over for Prime Rib, and dropped $25 dollars per cwt in just two days by Wednesday, December 13 pulling the daily Choice cutout much lower.
