Pune: Panic gripped the residents of BT Kawade Road in Ghorpadi as a group of six men pelted stones at three Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses late on Thursday evening to press for their demand of construction of a Development Plan (DP) road here.
Deputy commissioner of police (zone IV) Deepak Sakore, assistant commissioner of police Nilesh More and senior police inspector Anil Patrudkar of the Mundhwa police station rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. "They dispersed the crowd. No one was injured in the incident," police said.
Patrudkar said the suspects hurled stones at the buses which were plying on the road around 7.30pm. "Former corporator Prashant Mhaske, who had contested civic elections as an independent, was on a fast at the spot. He and his supporters were demanding construction of a DP road connecting BT Kawade Road and the Bhimnagar area. The road is already planned by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)," he said.
The DP road could not be built as the civic body is yet to acquire some private land, Patrudkar. "On Thursday, Pune municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar and other senior officers had a meeting on the issue and it was decided to acquire the land as soon as possible," he added.
Patrudkar said, "However, Mhaske continued his fast and his supporters thought that his health was deteriorating and started pelting stones at the PMPML buses."
No other vehicle was targeted by the suspects, he said, adding that police will file an offense against the suspects under the appropriate sections.
