NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old man allegedly shot at his girlfriend in a fit of rage after he found her drunk and then cooked up a story of robbery to protect himself, police said today.

The 20-year-old woman suffered bullet injury in her right leg and is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.

The man and his two associates have been arrested, police said.

On December 10, the police were informed by Bunty Grover that his friend's gold chain was snatched by unidentified men who also fired at her near Dhaula Kuan flyover.

Police said Grover too was in an inebriated state.

It was found that criminal cases were pending against Grover at Lajpat Nagar police station. He involved in several cases of attempt to murder, robbery and burglary, said Milind Mahadeo Dumbere, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest).

Grover narrated a different story to the police about the incident.

There were inconsistencies found in his friend's statement as well which made police suspicious. Grover was questioned and later confessed to having shot at his friend.

Grover was lodged in jail in connection with an attempt to murder case. He got into a relationship with the woman after being released from jail about five months ago.

The couple wanted to get married but Grover wanted her to quit drinking, said the DCP.

They would fight often since the woman refused to stop consuming alcohol.

Grover had met one Akash Tyagi in jail who was having illegal firearms in his possession.

On the day of the incident, Grover called the woman several times but she did not answer. Enraged, he drank and gambled with his friends in which he lost heavily.

Along with his friends, he reached the woman's house in Moti Nagar where he found her roaming outside her house drunk, said the officer.

The couple had a fight, following which Grover took a pistol from his friend and shot at her. While taking her to hospital, he asked her not to reveal about the incident to the police, said the DCP.

Grover's three friends helped him dispose of the pistol and destroy evidence. Two of his friends Tyagi and Ankur were also arrested, the police officer said.
