Airport news: THIS is the secret reason why baggage handlers throw your bag around

AIRPORT baggage handlers are infamous for throwing bags around when loading and unloading a plane, but according to an insider there is a secret explanation for why they do this.

AIRPORT baggage handlers are tasked with transporting suitcases on and off a plane, and then on to a luggage carousel.

Sometimes, this means bags are thrown around in a seemingly careless fashion which compromises the contents inside or can damage the case.

Those who have had their luggage damaged in the past while it has been in stowage will definitely have been angry about how they have been handled.

However, it turns out there is a understandable reason for why baggage is tossed about in this manner, according to an insider who works as an airline baggage handler.

I’m not going to lie, your checked luggage takes a beating

“I’m not going to lie, your checked luggage takes a beating,” the anonymous insider confirmed.

However, he says the reason bags are “thrown” is because of the time restrictions associated with the baggage handling job.

“Due to the nature of some aircrafts, it would be impossible to turn around in an hour or less without throwing bags because it’s just faster,” he said.

Therefore, throwing bags is done because it saves valuable time when doing these big turn arounds.

This can caught a number of breakages on the cases themselves, he reveals.

“Wheels and handles often break or crack on impact and anything fragile inside that is not packed well doesn’t stand much of a chance.

He also warns: “Don’t put red wine or alcohol in your suitcase ever”.

While in some circumstances fragile stickers protect your luggage, this isn’t always the case, according to the insider.

“Those fragile stickers don’t get noticed very often in the rush of loading bags unless it is an obvious shape, such as a musical instrument.”

Baggage handlers: Workers are tasked with transporting suitcases on and off a plane

Back in August this year, Thomas Cook passenger recorded a video of a baggage handler hurling luggage into a plane hold.

She flew from London Gatwick to Dalaman in Turkey with the company, and when she arrived there her baggage was “severely damaged”, according to her account.

The footage shows a man standing at the plane hold entrance, throwing suitcases from one side to the next.

However, the travel company said they had no record of Shannon travelling with the airline to Dalaman – and tried to contact the passenger without managing to.
