As stores across the country take part in 12 days of holiday deals and giveaways, National Geographic's Photo Ark project is doing something a little different. 

The Photo Ark project, which aims to document every species living in the world’s zoos and other protected areas before they're extinct, is releasing one photo a day for 12 days on social media. From koalas to flamingos and finches, this is a 12 days roundup that doesn't require purchasing clothing or electronics you might never use.

The Photo Ark project, which was founded by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, features photos of animals on a black background, as they stare directly into the camera. 

With over 6,500 portraits, the Photo Ark project aims to take pictures of every species in human care on the planet. The photos are meant to inspire people to save animals while they still have a chance.
