AIUDF chief lauds Rahul Gandhi elevation

GUWAHATI: The chief of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Lok Sabha MP, Badruddin Ajmal has been effusive in his praise for Rahul Gandhi ever since his elevation to the post of AICC president. This is particularly strange because the AIUDF and Congress in Assam never spare an opportunity to criticize each other.

"Rahul Gandhi's elevation has come at the right time. We believe Rahul's leadership will be able to steer the Congress in the fight against communal forces and BJP," Ajmal said here on Wednesday. Speaking about Congress' election campaign in Gujarat, Ajmal said over the last few months, people have witnessed a perceptible change in Rahul Gandhi and his "political maturity" as far as challenging Modi and BJP is concerned.

"The transformation in Rahul Gandhi is obvious and has been witnessed by all. Even a skilled orator like Modi had to be in the defensive because of him. Once the butt of 'Pappu' jokes, Rahul has now transformed into a leader who can challenge BJP and the communal forces with resoluteness. We are very confident that he will take forward the fight against the communal forces in an effective way," Ajmal observed.

"Of late, we have seen a sense of desperation in the ruling BJP in Gujarat with Rahul leading the charge for Congress. He was very effective in raising the anti-people policies of Modi government at the Centre as well as in the BJP-ruled state," he added.

It is well known that AIUDF and Congress do not see eye-to-eye in Assam. But Ajmal is a part of the 18-party anti-BJP alliance led by the Congress and his association with the alliance has kept alive the possibilities of seeing a similar coalition in Assam. Though Congress has always denied any intention of joining hands with AIUDF, Ajmal has been speaking out on the importance of bringing secular parties together to take on BJP in Assam.

Back in October this year, there was much speculation of an alliance of secular paties being formed to challenge the BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Congress, however, has consistently maintained that it wants to keep its distance from both the BJP and AIUDF. Ajmal had previously blamed former chief minister Tarun Gogoi of rejecting the proposal of a grand alliance and helping BJP to come to power in the state elections last year.
