With nu metal was on the horizon, mainstream rock was getting darker and harsher. On the basis of their 2001 album "Is Electric No," the MacArtur High School grads in the Cinderleaf were making music that was equally powerful but more melodic and humane -- a (slight) throwback to Husker Du's hooky punk. And, at performances, audience members will be able to offer words that will be combined to form a title and an improvised work will be created to reflect that title. The latest is Choffel, a former contestant on “The Voice” who is working a new album, “Hello Goodbye.” Choffel is a strong enough singer to take on Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” but she dials it back on her own songs, which are backed by her acoustic guitar – often working in subtle reggae and world rhythms.

There was the concert that moved between stages at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre and the Majestic, and the early morning wake-up gig at the Cobalt Club on McCullough Avenue. Their next show may not only take the cake, but sell you a slice of it. At Buttercup’s Psychedelic Garage Sale, band members will be selling instruments and other gear, more typical merch such as records, posters and T-shirts and, apparently, stuff from their homes while playing music from their albums “Sick Yellow Flower” and “Hot Love.” Drummer Dane Rousay will join the core band -- Erik Sanden, Joe Reyes and Odie – for the show and sale.
