Houston coach Major Applewhite does not plan to rush a decision on hiring a new offensive coordinator.

A hire won’t be made until after the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl as Applewhite goes through the process of “visiting and talking” to potential candidates.

The Cougars are in search of a new offensive coordinator following the departure of Brian Johnson to Florida.

“There’s a fine line between waiting too long and there’s also a fine line between going too fast,” Applewhite said. “There’s some good prospects. We just want to take our time.”

Applewhite has not decided whether the new offensive coordinator will have a dual role that includes quarterbacks coach.

“There’s all kinds of options he said,” Applewhite said.

For the bowl game, wide receivers coach Kenny Guiton will be in the coaches box and tight ends coach James Casey and offensive graduate assistant Malcolm Kelly will assume bigger roles in the passing game.
