GTA Online could have more life in it yet - despite having been out for over four years.

Grand Theft Auto V has been a consistent best-seller for publisher Take-Two and developer Rockstar, mostly thanks to the amazing support the developer has been giving to the game since launch.

The most recent DLC for the game - called The Doomsday Heist - had some players theorizing it might be the last installment for the game: it was a big, bombastic blowout that would make a fantastic full-stop for the series.

However, the wording of a recent Rockstar announcement has poured water on that theory.

In an update of the Rockstar Newswire summing up reaction to the game, the developer signs off by writing:

"Stay tuned to the Newswire for even more exciting updates coming to GTA Online."

That definitely doesn't sound the developers plans for the title are over to us.

This comes after news that Red Dead Redemption 2 items have been found in the code for the new GTA Online update.

Dataminers over at the Red Dead Network have already managed to dig out assets relating to Red Dead Redemption 2 in the game.

As VG247 reports, A model of a chest found in The Doomsday Heist's files appears to be inscribed with Boles Overland Stagecoach Co., a company reportedly visible in Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshots.

A Golden Revolver has also been uncovered in the game, and the flavour text that comes with it seems to suggest that completing tasks in GTA Online will generate loot in RDR2:

“Because sometimes revenge is a dish best served six times, in quick succession, right between the eyes. Sign up to the Rockstar Games Social Club to get access to the Double Action Revolver Head Shot Challenge. Beating this challenge will unlock GTA$ and an exclusive variation of the weapon in Red Dead Redemption 2.”

It's suggested that a character called Dead Hick - who has also been found in the files - will lead you on a hunt to the treasure chest mentioned above.

If these hints are to be believed, we could be seeing some Red Dead Redemption 2 items and teases in GTA Online in a future update.

There's certainly life in the popular game yet, then.

It should be noted that Rockstar has no plans to add single-player content to the game, however.

"As a company we love single-player more than anything, and believe in it absolutely for storytelling and a sense of immersion in a world, multiplayer games don't rival single-player games," Rockstar design director Imran Sarwar stated in an interview with Game Informer.

"With GTA V, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete."

The best you can hope for are more updates like the Doomsday Heist - which add co-op missions and more things for you to do as a team.

But, right now, that seems like a very likely direction for Rockstar to move in.
