Poor infra in rural schools forces boards to limit difficult questions

GUWAHATI: The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba), Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and the CBSE have decided to reduce the weightage of difficult questions and keep the percentage between 15 and 20% in 2018. This, many feel, will bring cheers among examinees preparing for their Class10 and12boardexaminations.

While Seba and AHSEC have decided to limit the percentageof difficult questions to 20% and 15% respectively, other boards, including the CBSE, are unlikely to go beyond 25%. Along with 15% difficult questions, the AHSEC will earmark60% marks for easy questions and 25% for questions of average standard.

"The primary reason for limiting the percentageofdifficult questions is poor infrastructure of schools in the rural areas. In these places, majority of students are illequipped to compete with their peers studying in elite schools. So,we are going to allocate a minimum percentage of marks for difficult questions," said a senior AHSEC official.

A CBSE official said the percentage of difficult questions will vary for different subjects. He, however, said that it will not be very tough to pass the examination. Though board toppers had earlier complained of facing difficulty while applying for colleges in Delhi owing to low percentage of marks, the state has seen an upward trend in the last couple of years.

However, the AHSEC said higher number of easier questions can't necessarily resultin highscoring as the difficult questions need to be answered correctly. Seba said only about 20% weightage will be on difficult questions, while 50% questions will of average standard. The rest 30% will be easy to answer,it added.
