DUBAI: Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday ruled that a Briton be jailed for one year to be followed by deportation on charges of assaulting a policeman while on duty.

The accused assaulted a sergeant and used vulgar language to insult him after the sergeant had stopped him based on a report in which the name of the accused was mentioned. Objecting to his arrest, the accused untied himself and punched the sergeant in the chest before trying to escape.

The court also ruled that an Arab, 31, be sentenced to three years in jail and fined Dhs50,000 followed by deportation on charges of possessing 40 kg of amphetamine. The court ordered that the seized material be confiscated.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted three Asians of the charge of stealing electric wires worth Dhs250,000.
