Troy schools nab $7M for afterschool programs
TROY — Troy schools won a $7 million grant to provide afterschool programs at each of the district's five elementary schools.
The Empire State After School grant will enable the schools to offer dinner each night, academic support, and mindfulness and enrichment activities to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to a news release. The Troy YMCA, Troy Boys and Girls Club, and the Albany Jewish Community Center will partner with the district to provide the services.
The district will receive $1.4 million a year for five years totaling $7 million. A total of $35 million was awarded statewide through the state Office of Children and Family Services.
"We are proud of our rising graduation rates and the fact that we have eliminated the achievement gap between white and minority students," said Superintendent John Carmello. "This is thanks in part to our high quality programs and an unrelenting focus on efficacy on every level within the district. We are optimistic that The Empire State After School program will be yet another piece of the puzzle toward the increasing success of our students."
Research shows afterschool programs are associated with higher academic achievement and graduation rates, and have been shown to decrease juvenile crime.
The first year of the program is scheduled to begin Jan. 16 and will run through June 19. Space is limited. Parents must complete an application and survey for each child they wish to enroll by Dec. 22.
