A driver was hospitalized after he crashed an SUV into a Speedway home Thursday morning.

The Chevrolet HHR not only crashed through a wall about 8:10 a.m. but had fallen into the basement of the home in the 2500 block of Moeller Road, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said.

The incident began minutes earlier when police and rescuers were called to assist a driver who appeared to have slumped over at the steering wheel.

As an officer approached the vehicle near Moeller and 30th Street, Reith said, the driver sped away.

The driver quickly lost control. The Chevrolet struck a different home before it crashed into the second home, Reith said.

Rescuers opened the back and helped the driver climb out, Reith said. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition.

Homeowners Steven Russell, 60, and Yadira Russell, 45, were in the home and were not injured, Reith said.
