SURAT: A resident doctor was thrashed by at least 10 men at New Civil Hospital (NCH) after a 40-year-old woman patient died of illness here on Wednesday night. The group alleged negligence and thrashed the doctor. Meanwhile, doctors threatened to go on strike claiming poor security arrangements in the hospital. They have threatened to go on strike even in the emergency and trauma centre if their security-related demands are not met by Friday morning by the authorities.

A police complaint was lodged at Khatodara police station by in-charge medical superintendent Ganesh Govekar and later a group of hooligans was booked for thrashing resident doctor Mittal, who has suffered serious injuries on his body. Resident doctors had put pressure on the medical superintendent to lodge a police complaint since such incidents were repeatedly taking place at NCH.

Rizwana Shah, a resident of Kadar Sha Ni Nal, was brought to NCH in a critical condition on Wednesday. Functioning of her lungs and heart had become abnormal and she died during treatment. Family members left with the body, but a group of 10 men, who were relatives of the deceased, returned to the hospital at around 8 pm and thrashed the doctor on duty for over 20 minutes. The hospital staff called the security guard for help, but no one came.

Around 200 resident doctors have threatened to go on strike over their pending demands of improved security arrangements in the hospital.

They have given ultimatum to the hospital authorities to fulfill their demands by Friday morning or else they will go on strike. The doctors are demanding one security guard outside each ward and that the entire hospital premises be brought under CCTV surveillance. They are also demanding installation of emergency signalling alarm system in the hospital.
