Pro-incumbency wave in Gujarat, says BJP

| | NEW DELHI

While hitting out at the Congress on the issue of corruption and policy paralysis during its rule at the  Centre, the BJP on Wednesday claimed that there is "a pro-incumbency wave"  in Gujarat and the party would cross the 150-mark in the polls and denied any undercurrent for change in the State.

"Congress would get a big shock on December 18, the day of results as the BJP would cross the figure of 150 seats in the State,"  senior BJP leader Piyush Goyal said here at a Press conference.

On Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi's comment as to why Prime Minister was now not talking about corruption, Goyal said this is so because unlike the Congress, the BJP does not indulge in corruption. He cited the case of former Congress  MLA Rajesh Jain who he said was allegedly  arrested on the charge of converting banned notes after the announcement of demonetisation.  Taking a jibe at the Opposition Congress, the Union Minister said " now we know why Congress opposed demonetisation".

He said the BJP is winning the Gujarat election and there is no anti-incumbency factor working in the State and instead there is "a pro-incumbency wave" because of the development of the State during the BJP rule.

Referring to the interviews given by Rahul, Goyal said the Congress leader has turned so "desperate" fearing defeat in the Gujarat polls that he "violated" the Model Code of Conduct to give interviews to the media a day before the last phase of the elections.

Results of the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections are scheduled to be announced on December 18.

He also trained guns at the Opposition party over the conviction of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda by a court Wednesday  in a coal block allocation corruption case. Koda, he said, was an independent and "propped up" as Chief Minister by senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
