NAGPUR: For the first time, Nagpur University (NU) has decided to give an additional 20 minutes per hour time to differently abled students to write their exams. The students can start availing the facility right away. In a three-hour paper, these students would now get an additional hour.
Besides, visually impaired and students with certain disabilities would also be allowed to bring writers at the exam centres.
The decision to implement government resolution (GR) of March 2016 was taken by Board of Examinations and Evaluation in October when the winter exams started but the NU notification was issued only last week. It is a major respite to hundreds of students who were demanding additional time and writer facility at university level like just like board exams.
Director, board of examinations and evaluation Neeraj Khaty said so far only 30 minutes in both three-hour and two-hour papers used to be given to only orthopaedically, physically and visually challenged students. "The facility has been granted with immediate effect. As per GR, 21 disabilities have been included for giving special concession. They are also entitled for some incentive and grace marks," he said.
NU is also planning to create a bank of writers from among the 'Earn and Learn' scheme students and upload the list along with their contact details on its website. Khaty said the vice-chancellor was planning to propose a remuneration Rs300 per paper.
He added the differently abled students did not need to visit the exam section for verification but would have to produce medical certificates along with IDs at the exam centres. "The verification would be done by the officers in-charge. For outstation students, it would be difficult, so we empowerd the incharge at respective exam centres. The writers too can be verified there. Later NU may provide a bank of writers," Khaty said.
City president of National Students Council of India (NSUI) Aamir Noori, who had led a delegation to NU last month to push for these and other demands, welcomed the move.
"The officers incharge at exam centres are not aware of the GR. It is the duty of the exam section to repeatedly send notifications regarding the facilities for the differently-abled students. Just like in the case of parking fee where exam centres stopped charging it and the NU also got it printed on the hall ticket, this decision must be drilled in the minds so no student faces any problem," Noori said.
