The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations threw a curveball into the awards race on Wednesday morning, shutting out early favorites “The Post” and “The Shape of Water” from its all-important list of outstanding cast nominees, and instead including “The Big Sick” — which was left out of Golden Globe nominations earlier this week — and “Get Out.”
Ever since 1996, every best picture Oscar winner has landed a SAG top ensemble nomination beforehand. Another surprising snub: “Call Me by Your Name,” which has been considered a strong contender for the best picture Oscar.
The other SAG outstanding cast nominees are “Lady Bird,” “Mudbound,” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
The best actor nominees are Timothée Chalamet (“Call My by Your Name”), James Franco (“The Disaster Artist”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) and Denzel Washington, a surprise inclusion since his film “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” drew poor reviews.
Notably absent from the list was Daniel Day-Lewis, who has been much lauded for his exacting performance in “Phantom Thread.”

For best supporting actress, Hong Chau (“Downsizing”) landed a nomination ahead of such heavy hitters as Melisso Leo (“Novitiate”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Shape of Water”).
Meanwhile, Michael Stulhbarg, who has been widely hailed for his hat trick of supporting performances in “Call Me by Your Name,” “The Shape of Water” and “The Post,” failed to secure a SAG nomination. (He also was shut out of the Golden Globe nominations earlier this week.)
The biggest winner among the nominees was “Three Billboards,” which landed nominations in the crucial categories of ensemble, best actress (Frances McDormand) and two in best supporting actor, for Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson.
With 160,000 members, the SAG-Aftra union is the biggest in Hollywood, and it claims the biggest voting pool — about 120,000 people — of all the movie awards. Its nominees are strong predictors for the acting and best picture Oscar nominations.
The awards will be handed out Jan. 21 and broadcast on TNT and TBS. Here is the full list of nominees:
