Daswant was first arrested in February this year for the alleged rape and murder the girl and granted bail in September.

CHENNAI: A 22-year old man, arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a child early this year and the recent killing of his mother, today faced the ire of angry women when he was brought to a court near here.

As Dashwant, nabbed from Mumbai, was brought to the court in suburban Chengelpet from Puzhal Central Prison amid tight security, a group of persons, who are members of some women bodies, raised slogans and attempted to rough him up.

He was brought to the court for trial in the rape and murder of seven-year-old girl, his neighbour.

No sooner he climbed down from a police vehicle to appear in the court than the women raised slogans against him, denouncing him for his alleged sexual assault of a child and killing his own mother.

Though several women tried to get near him, some of whom threw sandals at him, one woman managed to sneak too close and attempted to give a slap to Daswant.

Police removed the women from the spot and took the accused into the court.

Daswant, out on bail in the rape case, allegedly killed his mother on December 2 and escaped with her jewellery.

He was arrested in Mumbai a week later by a special Tamil Nadu police team with the help of their Maharashtra counterparts.

He was remanded to judicial custody by a court on December 10 and lodged in the Puzhal prison.

The accused was first arrested on December 6 in Mumbai but escaped from police custody the very next day. However, he was nabbed again on December 8.

He was first arrested in February this year for the alleged rape and murder the girl and granted bail in September.
