08 December 2017 - Áo dài is a Vietnamese
traditional dress worn by men and women. Although it originates from the
beginning of the Vietnamese culture, it is a timeless and always fashionable
piece of cloth.
Each culture has its own particularities
regarding the way people dress, cook, or behave in public and private life. Asian
culture is considered many historians and anthropologists to be one of the
oldest and richest in the world. For an outsider, it may look like they are the
same, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Vietnamese culture is one of the many
Asian cultures. You may have seen and encountered the Vietnamese culture if you
live in a multicultural or have travel in East Asia. One of the most
distinctive feature of the Vietnamese people is their traditional dress – the Áo
dài.
Áo dài is a part of the Vietnamese
heritage, and it consists of a few parts: the front and the back flap. Today is
mostly worn by women, however áo dài is also for men. If you follow the history
of the Vietnamese people áo dài, you will notice that there were periods when
other cultures tried to impose their dressing style on the Vietnamese, however
the áo dài survived and now many people around the country, from the South as
well as from the North of Vietnam are wearing it with pride. Many schools
actually ask their pupils to dress an áo dài when they are in the class. A good
perspective of the Vietnamese áo dài comes from an author from Hương Lan from Huế.
She lived in this city, which was the capital of Vietnam for her whole life,
hence she knows a lot about the Vietnamese culture. In the article Our Charming
and Timeless Áo Dài, she describes in great detail her love-hate relationship
of the Vietnamese traditional dress. Because she had to wear it every day at
school, while she was a teenager during the rebellious age, she hated it. Then,
when she started to understand the beauty her past generations created and
promoted it so that other people could appreciate it at their true value.
If you want to find an artistic perspective
of the áo dài, from a Vietnamese person, then Hương Lan blog is the perfect source.
