ALBANY — The Albany chapter of the pro-Palestine organization Jewish Voice for Peace presents its fourth annual Hanukkah Solidarity vigil at Townsend Park in Albany at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
“This year we’re calling for power to the people of Palestine and Puerto Rico,” said JVP member Keren Carmeli, who lived in Israel between the ages of four and 16. “We mean electrical power because these are both communities that have been devastated by very little electrical power which has impacted hospitals and schools, but also political power and sovereignty.”
More than 60 percent of Puerto Rico’s pre-storm power grid load has been restored after Hurricane Maria hit the island in September, according to government reports. In November, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that an “electricity shortage in the Gaza Strip has left residents with as little as four hours of power a day.”
In previous years, the Albany JVP has dedicated its Hanukkah vigils to causes such as the Black Lives Matter movement, the memory of Dontay Ivy, who was tased by Albany police and later died in April 2015, and the Native American Water Protectors in Standing Rock fighting a major pipeline project.
“Hanukkah is a celebration of a miracle of a small group of people fighting back against oppression,” Carmeli said. “We like to highlight that a small group of people can really make a difference and bring out justice.”
