South Africa's retail sales growth eased at a faster-than-expected pace in October, preliminary figures from Statistics South Africa showed Wednesday.
Retail sales rose 3.2 percent year-over-year in October, slower than the 5.7 percent rise in the previous month. Economists had expected the growth to moderate to 5.3 percent.
Sales of pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries grew 5.7 percent annually in October and those of household furniture, appliances and equipment climbed by 5.4 percent.
On a monthly basis, retail sales edged down 0.1 percent from September, when it decreased by 0.4 percent.
