The ministry of consumer affairs has stated that overcharging of packed products is an offence and a seller could be fined or face jail term. The Centre categorically said that it is a practice against consumer interest and it is a way of tax evasion. If a seller sells bottled water above MPP, he or she would have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 for the first time while for the second time, he or she would have to pay Rs 50,000 for the offence.
