LUDHIANA: An industrialist reportedly set himself on fire at his factory in Industrial Area, near Cheema Chowk, on Tuesday.
The family rushed Jatinderjeet Singh, 65, to civil hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said Jatinderjeet, owner of a hosiery machine tools manufacturing unit, lived with his family on the first and the second floor. The unit operated from the ground floor.
"His wife and younger son had gone to Mumbai to attend a marriage function. He was at home with his elder son and daughter-in-law. Like any other day, Jatinderjeet went to his office on Tuesday morning. Around 7am, a peon went to give him tea. He tried to open his office door, but it was bolted from inside. He then noticed smoke coming out of the cabin and raised the alarm," said a cop.
His son, Ramandeep Singh, rushed downstairs, broke open the door and found his father with burns. He took him to hospital and called up the police.
Ramandeep told the police that his father was under depression.
Assistant commissioner of police (central) Mandeep Singh said, "It is yet to be ascertained if it's a case of suicide as the room was locked form inside. Jatinderjeet's wife and younger son have been apprised of the incident. They are on way home. We will decide the next course of action after recording the statements of his family members."
