HYDERABAD: IN a relief to six candidates provisionally selected for the post of police constable, High Court has directed TS to consider their cases for the said posts in accordance with the guidelines of Supreme Court given in the Avatar Singh case. Justice A Rajasheker Reddy allowed the petitions filed by the six candidates, aged in their mid-20s, challenging the cancellation of their provisional selection on the ground that they were involved in criminal cases and were therefore not suitable for the post.

The petitioners’ counsel told the court that five of them had been acquitted by the criminal court and one was still facing the trial. The case of two petitioners was that they approached a girl  (complainant) when she was waiting for bus and harassed her to make love with one of them. One of the petitioners was involved in stalking. As for the other petitioners, they were allegedly involved in family and property disputes relating to elections.

“It is true that the law considers it unwise to appoint or continue in service a person guilty of an offence involving moral turpitude. What constitutes moral turpitude is nowhere defined conclusively”, he observed and allowed the petitions by setting aside the impugned proceedings of cancellation dated June 3 and August 19 this year.
