14:04(IST)

BOUNDARY: The Sri Lankan captain is struggling, he doesn't have the pace for short deliveries or for yorkers. He attempts to bowl it in the blockhole this time, ends up bowling a low full toss and Shreyas Iyer lifts it over the mid-wicket fielder to help himself to another boundary

14:02(IST)

SIX: Shreyas Iyers slams that over the covers for a maximum. Thisara Perera drops that short and Iyer clears his front foot and gets the bog one away

14:01(IST)

Now the attention is on Rohit Sharma who has reached 99 with a single, will he get his 16th century?

13:53(IST)

BOUNDARY: Shreyas Iyer is on the attack here and gets that away through the mid-wicket. Great use of his feet against the spinner and he now nears his maiden half-century in ODIs

13:50(IST)

BOUNDARY: Shreyas Iyer has been moving around well inside the pitch and he does that again and opens the face of the bat and runs it down to the thirdman fence. India 211/1 after 36 overs

13:50(IST)

Rohit Sharma will equal Virender Sehwag for the third most centuries as an opener for India if gets to the three-figure mark today. This will be his 14th as an opener

13:44(IST)

BOUNDARY: India's 200 is up and Rohit Sharma has entered the 90s after playing a beautiful cover drive. Rohit Sharma's ability to convert his fifty into a century is great in ODIs

13:41(IST)

BOUNDARY: A misfield gives Rohit Sharma another boundary. And India are now on the brink of reaching the 200-run mark. Rohit himself is nearing the century mark. He has a great record against Sri Lanka

13:40(IST)

BIG APPEAL: Shreyas Iyer comes down the track and gets hit on the pads, the bowler has a lound appeal but umpire turns it down. No DRS again

13:38(IST)

BOUNDARY: Shreyas Iyer waits and opens the face of the bat and runs it down to the thirdman fence. Once again Nuwan Pradeep paying the price for bowling too short

13:35(IST)

It is a cold morning in Mohali but there is no dearth of enthusiasm among the fans who have come out in numbers to watch this match. Not a full house for sure and it can't because this is a weekday, but still a decent number of people in the stands

13:29(IST)

BOUNDARY: The line has been pretty shocking from the bowler and he pitches that on and around the leg stump and Rohit Sharma gets that away fine for a boundary

13:28(IST)

Asela Gunaratne has been introduced into the attack and he starts off by bowling around the wicket and bowls two massively wide deliveries outside the leg stump

13:27(IST)

After 30 overs India are in a comfortable position, 170/1 with the duo of Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer looking in full control of the situation

13:24(IST)

BOUNDARY: Nuwan Pradeep bowls that short yet again and Rohit Sharma pulls that to the fence yet again. Pradeep hasn't been disciplined with his line and length today and he is paying for it

13:18(IST)

India look to accelerate :

1-5 overs : 20/0

6-10 overs : 13/0

11-15 overs : 42/0

16-20 overs : 33/0

21-25 overs : 25/1

13:17(IST)

SIX: And here comes the first maximum of the Indian innings. Pradeep pitches that short and Rohit Sharma pulls that over the mid-wicket fence, Rohit is the Indian captain in Kohli's absence and he has so far played a captain's hand

13:16(IST)

Nuwan Pradeep is back into the attack and Sri Lanka need a few more wickets here to put the breaks on to the Indian innings because the batsmen don't look in any trouble

13:14(IST)

BOUNDARY: A square cut from Shreyas Iyer this time and it travels to the boundary. Pathirana has picked up a wicket but he is proving to be very expensive. He is giving away boundaries in almost every over

13:13(IST)

Shreyas Iyer is a very highly rated young batsman and perhaps one of the brightest young batsmen in the country since Virat Kohli burst on to the scene. Lot of expectations from this batsman who belongs to the Bombay School of batsmanship

13:12(IST)

BOUNDARY: Shreyas Iyer makes good use of his feet and lofts Pathirana straight down the ground for a boundary.

13:06(IST)

ROHIT FIFTY: Rohit Sharma pushes that away for a single to bring up his 35th half-century in ODIs. He has taken his time and played himself in and we all know what happens when Rohit Sharma is in this kind of mood. Expecting a big knock won't be foolish today

13:05(IST)

Good fielding by the Lankans, Thirimanne took a good low catch to send back Dhawan and now Gunathilaka gives it his all on the boundary rope to deny Shreyas Iyer his first boundary of the innings

13:01(IST)

Shreyas Iyer come in as the number 3 batsman. Ajinkya Rahane has been kept out of the playing XI again nd that shows that the hosts are looking to give youngsters a long rope to prove themselves.

Important for India to have a big pool of players ahead of the 2019 World Cup

12:59(IST)

Dhawan-Rohit registered their 12th ODI century stand which is the joint 3rd most for India in ODIs. They have a conversion rate of 57.14%.

12:57(IST)

WICKET: Pathirana flights that and Dhawan steps out to get that away, doesn't get it from the middle of the bat. He is out for 68, India 115/1

12:56(IST)

BOUNDARY: Dhananjaya flights that up and Dhawan sweeps it fine to get that away to the boundary. India has had another good over. The hosts are up to 115 for no loss after 21 overs

PREVIEW IND vs SL, 2nd ODI: Handed an embarrassing defeat in the inaugural ODI, a wounded India would look to get even against an inspired Sri Lanka in a do-or-die second match on Wednesday. The loss not only hurt but was also an eye-opener for a team that has been dominant all throughout the long home season. Proving that the opening day surrender to Sri Lanka pacers at the Eden Gardens was no aberration, the Indian batting stood exposed once again against the moving ball. Chandigarh won't be as cold as Dharamsala but the pacers should come into play considering it is another 11:30 am start to the day-night affair. In that case, it will be another test for the Indian batsmen if the home team happens to bat first in a must-win contest. Barring old war-horse MS Dhoni, the highly-rated batsmen seemed like sitting ducks every time Suranga Lakmal pitched the ball up in the off-stump corridor. After the experienced Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan fell early, it was an ideal opportunity for the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey to weather the initial storm and make a big score. However, they all came a cropper and if it was not for Dhoni's fighting 65, India could well be out for their lowest ever total. If it was one person, who would be gutted looking at his teams' performance, it would be captain Virat Kohli, who opted out of the series to get married to Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma in Italy. Rohit, leading the side in Kohli's absence, was not amused either in his first ODI as captain. Though, he promised that the team will learn from Dharamsala debacle and bounce back in the remaining two games. "It is important to thrive in these conditions and come out good. It is an eye opener for all of us," Rohit had said after the seven-wicket loss. He is unlikely to tinker with the playing eleven but there is a possibility that Ajinkya Rahane is picked to shore up the inexperienced batting, especially the middle order.
Rahane sat out of the opening game as the team management only sees him as the back-up opener in the presence of Sharma and Dhawan. However, he has batted in the middle-order in a few games out of the 84 ODIs he has played. In the bowling department, the worry for India will be the performance of Hardik Pandya, who again leaked runs as the hosts tried to defend a paltry 112. He is picked as the bowling all-rounder for the South Africa Test series and needs to be at the top of his game ahead of the crucial tour starting next month. Considering Sri Lanka cantered to victory in 20.4 overs, spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav did not come on to bowl. They would be itching to get back into action after a month's gap. While India find themselves in an unusual situation at home, Sri Lanka have a golden opportunity to seal the series after ending a 12-match losing streak with a thumping win in Dharamsala. New Zealand too were on the cusp of history last month but faltered after winning the series opener as India bounced back to win the next two games.
The win must have done a world of good to the islanders' confidence after the beating they have taken at the hands of India at home and away this season. Lakmal was lethal again on a helping pitch while Angelo Mathews too made a promising return with the ball. Also effective on a seaming surface was pacer Nuwan Pradeep. The batting too clicked and completed the modest chase rather comfortably. As put by Rohit after the match, another 70-80 runs and it could have been a different story with the ball still moving in the evening.
