Tree authority gets 17 days to check on infra of gardens

THANE: Displeased by the pitiable condition of basic infrastructure in the 118 public gardens in the city, municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal issued a 17-day ultimatum to the tree authority to turn each of these gardens in use.

Besides repairing basic infrastructure like benches and toilets in these gardens, the civic chief has also instructed them to ensure that all the gardens have proper electricity and water supply.

While a few gardens in the city, like the one in front of the commissioner's bungalow, are well maintained and have all the facilities, most of the gardens do not have even basic facilities like a proper toilet.

"I go to one of the gardens around Kachrali lake for my evening walk. However, if I have to go to the washroom, I have to rush back home because the toilet there is in a pathetic state," said Shobha Karve (66).

In a meeting on Tuesday, the civic chief gave officials of the tree authority a weeks' time to survey the 118 gardens in the city and come up with a list of garden infrastructure that needs repair as well as the number of toilets that need to be restored or constructed all over again. Thereafter, these officials will be given 10 days to begin and complete the work slated to be carried out in this list.

Jaiswal also urged the tree authority to have a direct line of communication with citizens who visit gardens regularly and find any trees in the city that are in a dangerous condition. They then must take the required action. He has also advised that the officials must take action against those who pin up advertisements and banners on trees using nails.
