Rutland man sentenced to prison in drug ring case

Kwasi Asante

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) A Rutland man will serve five years in prison for his role in a drug ring that caused at least one fatal overdose.

Fifty-nine-year-old Kwasi Asante was sentenced last week to five years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin and cash smuggling. The Rutland Herald reports he will also have to forfeit $27,000 in seized funds and pay a $40,000 fine.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Asante was arrested last year in New Jersey, in conjunction with a drug sweep that arrested 30 people. Prosecutors noted that Asante was not himself a heroin addict and had a graduate degree in engineering.

Court records say he is connected to a 2015 fatal overdose in Rutland.
