Brexit news: David Davis has pleaded with Tory MPs to vote with the Government tonight

In an attempt to win over some of his Conservative colleagues, the Brexit Secretary urged their support in keeping the UK’s split from the European Union on track.

Theresa May’s Government is facing the prospect of defeat on its Brexit Bill tonight because it may lack the votes to block an amendment calling for more parliamentary scrutiny over the final deal.

The amendment has the backing of a number of Tory MPs as well as opposition parties.

In an early-morning note aimed at reassuring his fellow party members, Mr Davis wrote: “There will be a number of votes for Parliament on the final deal we strike with the EU.

“Our entire approach has been to listen to MPs where they say they can improve the Bill.”

But so far, the Tory rebels have refused to back down.

If approved, the amendment, which was tabled by former attorney general Dominic Grieve, would mean Parliament would have to approve the Government’s final Brexit deal once the full details are made public.

This could mean MPs would have the power to send Theresa May negotiate back to Brussels to negotiate new terms if they are unhappy with the agreement.

Tory MP Mr Grieve told Sky News today the amendment was not a “sabotage” of Brexit, but a way to ensure Parliament was able to hold the Government to account.

He said: "My impression of the last few days, when I've been talking to the government, is it seems to be a bit of a dialogue of the deaf. They've sort of turned this into a battle of wills.

"This is a completely pointless exercise. They need to listen to the point that's being made and they need to respond to it."

Labour’s shadow Brexit secretary, Sir Keir Starmer, confirmed his party will support the amendment.

He tweeted: “Labour will back Dominic Grieve's amendment giving Parliament a proper say on the Brexit deal if he pushes it to a vote tonight. The terms of our future are not for the government alone to determine.”
