Royal resemblance: The uncanny similarities between successive generations of royals
As former Palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter observes that Prince Charles is looking remarkably similar to his father, we look at other royals who bear an uncanny resemblance to each other.

THE QUEEN / QUEEN MARY, GEORGE V’S CONSORT
Although she died shortly before her granddaughter was crowned Elizabeth II, this 1944 picture of Mary, wife of King George V, aged 76, now appears to be a mirror image of our own Queen aged 91 – not only physically but sartorially too.
One could easily imagine that hat gracing Ascot today.

PRINCE CHARLES / DUKE OF EDINBURGH
As Charles grows closer to the throne he also becomes increasingly like his father.
As these two photos show, from the glint in their eyes to the sweep of their hair to the very way they hold themselves, Princes Charles and Philip seem to be morphing into the same person as they age.

PRINCE HARRY / PRINCE PHILIP
The piercing eyes, square jaw, cropped ginger beard and mischievous smile… it’s no surprise that Prince Harry cuts a dash in his officer’s uniform.
What is a little more eye-opening is how strikingly similar he looks to his grandfather Prince Philip in his days as a 36-year-old pin-up.

PRINCE EDWARD / KING GEORGE VI
If the ears are a giveaway there are plenty of other reasons to double-take these pictures of Prince Edward and his grandfather King George VI.
From the set of the eyes and the shape of the nose to the shape of the entire face it seems that the youngest son of the Queen is something of a mirror image to her own late father.

PRINCESS EUGENIE / QUEEN MOTHER
One of them is a thoroughly modern Princess – the other perhaps the best-loved royal of modern times.
But with her doe eyes, delicate nose and moon-shaped face Princess Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and currently eighth in line to the throne, bears more than a passing resemblance to her great-grandmother the Queen Mum.
